Done with BDS

I had a very hard time actually putting the lamp together and getting it to all fit. I had to do some problem solving and it also worked out in my favor. I wanted my lamp to be a perfect circle but it kept on getting warped. However when I had critique everyone said they liked it better like that than in a circle. In the end I wrapped wire around the lamp cord and I got it to work. I am happy to say that I am done with the last BDS project of the semester.

New Idea

Even though my spiral idea did not work I did figure out that they connect very well. This gave me the idea to cut squares and connect them that way. This idea worked out and I am very happy with it!

Fail

My spiral ideal did not work so I am going to have to come up with a new idea.

3 models

The idea that I am going to try and make is a spiral that hangs down over the light and is intertwined with other spirals. I am worried to see if this works ill just have to see and make it.

Bristol Board

The Bristol board is harder to work with than regular paper. It is less flexible but more sturdy so this made it different than paper. I did figure out things that I could do differently than paper that is very interesting. Because it is thicker you can rip away layers. Ripping it also makes a cool effect. I do not know really what I am going to make but I am not supposed to yet.

Lamp Inspiration

Over thanksgiving break I looked at different lamps for inspiration

Project 4

We are now starting on project four which is to make a lamp made out of paper. We are supposed to found out and use ways to let the light through. We made 25 or more models that demonstrate that.

Final Book

The final product of my book was good but not the best it could be. It had poor craftsmanship but this was due to having mono during the weeks that they we've been working on it.

Written reflection on Parts of the Letter

This lecture was very helpful for this project. When talking about our letters with my group members it was useful to know the terms of the part of the letter we were talking about. I know that not only did it help for this project but also for my upcoming college classes. It would also be beneficial to know the terms for my future career.

Inspirations for Books

I wanted to do something other than an accordion book style for my book so I found some things online that gave me inspiration for it.

Compress Onsite

Today we put our words onsite and showed the class. I think that making the foam, though challenging, was a good decision because the letters looked very good when placed in the windows and compressed themselves.

Construction

Construction of the words were harder than we thought. Cutting the foam was difficult to make it not rigged on the sides. Also it was when we were done we noticed that they couldn't stand on their own. So we had do a lot of problem solving. We ended up cutting in the middle of the letters and adding wire for more support. This is very time consuming, it would have been better if we could have bought more foam but it was expensive.

Reflection on Photography essay

One of the chapters went over the history of photography but what I took from the passage that was helpful was how photography can be divided into two sections, documentation and art-photography. When documenting one is taking the picture to capture a moment in time, and letting the camera do most of the work. When it comes to art-photography there is intention, passion, and expression behind the thought of the photo. This information was useful because we used both kinds of photography for our project. We documented our construction of the letter, and we also used art-photography when placing the letters in intentional spaces around campus. The other passage teaches different elements that can be used to take a successful picture. An example is how symmetry and asymmetry can make a composition more appealing to the viewer. Or by using framing this directs the viewers’ eye. These skills and ideas helped make our pictures of our letters more visually successful.

Models

During class our group decided that we wanted to make our word flexible so that could actually compress itself and fit into a small space. After brainstorm awhile Linda helped us come up with the idea that to make our letters out of foam, that way we could smash our letters. Then we started on our model.

Compress Collage

These are some of the collages that we made for class of my word. This was to give us an idea about how to make our word and really express its meaning. I thought this was a pointless part for the project but after I started doing it I really started to see how it really did help me explore the meaning of the word compress.

Writer's Toolbox

Writing is very important when it comes to designing. The ideas that one may have in their head may not be able to be expressed by pictures. From the beginning of the design to the end, writing is a skill that every designer should have. For example mind maps are a way loosen in brain come up with ideas that are out of the box. Free writing is a great to get thoughts out on paper while one is working on the project. Brain writing is lets groups work together better. Essentially this passage is saying that one may not think that writing has much to do with design but it is actually a good way to approach your design process.

Chris and Soojin Buzelli, Illustrator and Art Director

I really liked this Hallmark. It was very interesting learning about how they both have an art background and schooling but are in different places. Chris is an illustrator and it is so cool to see his art and what he has done with that. Soojin is an art director which would be interesting job. I've thought about wanting to do that so I liked hearing what she did with job. However instead of doing it for a newspaper or journal like she does I would rather do it for a fashion magazine. This is one of the best hallmarks because it really had to do with where I want to go in the future.

Commercial Filming

Our commercial I think it going to be really good. Jose is going to take over most of it I he is really excited about it. We are going to film it tomorrow. We decided that it is going to be kinda like a infomercial but mixed with a movie trailer. So it is going to have a serious but funny effect. I am excited to start filming and see it when it's done.

Searching

Over break even though we are starting to finalize what our product it going to look like I am still going to look at over products which we could still bring in new ideas to add. This is one that i found that I thought was stylish and would being a vintage element to our product.

Commercial

I came up with several ideas for a commercials for my groups product. One was about different celebrities that like "love" it to and telling people to buy it. My favorite was a ridicules informercials like the classic snuggie

Poster Critique

This is the first draft for my poster. Getting that much information into a poster without it looking too busy in one area was challenging. I don't really like but hopefully during critique I can get the feed back I need to make it better.

Prototypes

I looked at many glasses cases today to try and improve my design further. We threw around the idea of instead of having just improving the design making it completely different. These are the two different prototypes we came up with and we'll have to choose which direction to go.

Poster Ideas

Today my group decided that I would be working on the poster. I came up with some very simple concept sketches to show them. I really wanted to incorporate the actual glasses into the poster while see how it works out.

Project 2

Today we were assigned our groups in class. We then showed our objects that we brought that were poorly designed. My group picked my object, the normal eyeglass case. After brainstorming for awhile we came up with the problems with it.
-Closed to forcefully
-Too sleek
-Falls when opened
-Too small
-Does not always shut your glasses in properly
-No good grip to open it up

We when started coming up with ideas to improve. I am excited to see what my teammates come up with next class.

Don Norman video

I thought that is was interesting how he claims that emotion plays so much into design. He said that design can and should be fun. Fear causes you to focus and happiness lets your mind wonder and problem solve by thinking outside of the box
He also thinks the subconscious wants to be in control and a designer should take that into consideration. I loved what Don Norman had to say not just about design but also about life. He made me think about the real purpose of design and what designers should really strive for.

Ideas

I found this hanger poster online. I like that how it has a style to it instead of being too straight and neat. This gives me an idea about drawing some clothes on my poster to give it a style too.

Process Book in the Making

I thought that this picture would be a cool design to put on the side on my process book. I would have to make something like this in photoshop but I think that it would give it an edge and be more interesting if I added this element.

IN-Design

The only program that I used in high-school was photoshop. So in-design is a new program for me. It seems that I will be using a lot thought out my college career in design. Using in-design is not too difficult however and hopefully I can master it by the end of the semester. I am so happy that they gave us the grid to work of though, it will be a good way to get used to the program and the placement of things on the page.

This picture that I found online caught my eye. The design is very simple but it has a big meaning behind it of freedom. It got me thinking about my poster and how it does not have to be showy to get my point across. I love the silhouettes and that has given me a few more ideas about my design.

Principles of Color Design

Limited Color Palette:
This pattern has a limited color but that is what makes the pattern successful and beautiful. It is from a book cover that is about design. The simpleness of the flowers gives it an elegant look.

Use of Neutrals:
This is a close up picture of a pair of shoes I own. The sparkles of the shoes are all sorts of colors, and catch the light as one walks. That would seem like too much however the base color of the shoe is a dark gray which makes the shoe not overbearing.

Beginning College

I can already tell that going through the Design program is going to be challenging yet rewarding. Though College is VERY different than high school I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to take AP art through my high school. It prepared me for the fast pace of college overall. So far I love college for so many reasons and a big one my art classes. It feels unreal to finally be working towards my passion and career at the same time.
